Election Reform

FairVote acts to transform our elections to achieve universal access to participation, a full spectrum of meaningful ballot choices and majority rule with fair representation for all. As a catalyst for change, we build support for innovative strategies to win a constitutionally protected right to vote, universal voter registration, a national popular vote for president, instant runoff voting and proportional representation.

Representative Elections

Here are some ideas which would be easy to implement once we enact NCID. Prior to NCID, these measures can be difficult to enact because some politicians benefit from the unfairness of the current system. Hence, it is difficult for politicians who get elected to change the broken system which elected them. However, the People are always losers in an unfair political system.

Open Debates is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to reforming the presidential debate process. Currently, the presidential debates are secretly controlled by the major parties, through the private bipartisan corporation called the Commission on Presidential Debates, resulting in the stultification of format, the exclusion of popular candidates, and the avoidance of pressing national issues.

Instant runoff voting is a voting system used for single-winner elections in which voters rank candidates in order of preference using one ballot. It requires no further voting rounds. If no candidate receives a majority of first choices, the candidate with the fewest number of votes is eliminated, and the votes cast for that candidate are redistributed to the remaining candidates according to the voters’ indicated preference. This process is repeated until one candidate has a majority among votes for candidates not eliminated.

Initiative Elections

NCID would provide citizen deliberation for all jurisdictions.

http://healthydemocracyoregon.org/ The Citizens’ Initiative Review is a citizen-based review process for statewide ballot measures. Each Citizens’ Initiative Review panel would hear arguments from the campaigns for and against the measure, along with background information and testimony from policy professionals and affected parties. Following this careful multi-day review, the panel would deliberate on the merits of the measure.
